Charles R. Patchin is facing trial next month over an alleged case of abusive discipline that occured in a halfway house.

Patchin is being charged with forcing several teenagers to stand in a pit of pig manure, and spanking a teen 30 times with a board.

Two parents groups in an Indianapolis mall volunteer to keep teens out of trouble while shopping.

The volunteers, armed with two-way radios, harass kids out after curfew, and those with clothing that doesn't "meet a parent's standards."

Judge Changes Juvenile Court

San Mateo County's Judge Marta Diaz has made some changes since aquiring her new position.

Judge Diaz started by re-painting the interior walls of the courtroom to a "cheerier" tone. Other changes include revision of the county's arrest procedures for juveniles, which states that all arrestees must be interviewed by a team of specialists.

Youth Boot Camp Settles Lawsuit

A boot camp for "troubled youths" has settled a lawsuit with a dead boy's parents.

Anthony Haynes, 14, died from complications of dehydration and near-drowning. Counselors had placed him in a bathtub of cool water after he had collapsed from triple digit heat.

Terms of the settlement were not revealed. The Phoenix area camp was run by America's Buffalo Soldiers Re-Enacters Association. (www.thebuffalosoldiers.com)

Lt. Gov. Mismanages Youth Money

The Denver Post reported today that Colorado's Lt. Governor Joe Rogers has mismanaged thousands of dollars donated to a youth education conference to pay for meals, trips, and electronics.

Rogers indicated that checks for pizza, candy, and his wife's cellphone bill were legitimate expenses. Contributors to the fund said they wished it had been spent on the conference.

Walgreens Makes Youth-Tobacco Deal

Walgreens has announced a change in its policies to prevent teenagers from buying tobacco products.

The Deerfield-based company will end self-service displays, and limit the number of clerks under 18 who sell tobacco products.

Walgreens is the first U.S. retailer to take part in a state led initiative to curb youth smoking. Other U.S. retailers are under pressure to follow suit.
